HOLI
Often regarded as India’s most colorful festival, the celebration of Holi is enjoyed by people of all ages. It is important to understand the religious significance as well as the cultural and social aspects of this festival. Of the various legends that are connected to Holi, the most popular is associated with Prahlad and Hiranyakshyap in which the burning of the Holika is initiated. Another legend is attributed to Radha and Krishna in which Krishna took delight in applying color on Radha’s face a prank that has become tradition all over India for centuries. The cultural significance of Holi brings a positive vibe for Hindus and guides them to help people identify these things in their lives and lead them to a better and truthful life. Regarding the social significance, the celebration of Holi invites society together without any discrimination to join in the joyous mood of the festival. As gift, sweets, and well wishes are exchanged, Holi is a time to cherish and strengthen relationships.
USC's Hindu Student Organization co-sponsors the celebration of Holi annually in March. With over a 100 people generally attending the event, students arrive at Dockweiler Beach in the morning and spend the afternoon throwing colored powder on one another. Afterwards, food is provided and music is often played. The true spirit of the festival is displayed at this event, as students apply powder to fellow participants whom they have never met saying "Happy Holi" to one another.
